Harrison beaten again as Bates takes two titles in one day
South Midlands Pool TourJason Bates from Nuneaton confirmed that his Event 2 win over Mark White (played on the morning of Event 3) was no fluke as he claimed the South Midlands Tour Event 3 title as well.

This time it was Liam Farrell, another Coventry resident, who was the runner up by a score line of 7-1.

Jason’s route to the final was littered with top names. After a bye in round1 he was next up to player David Marjolin from Long Buckby, winning comfortably by 5-2.

His next two matches pitted him against two very established Northants County A players, one of which being current A team vice Captain Graham Berrutto. Bates was in free flow by now though and marched to victory 5-2.

The quarter final match was against Ex- Northants County A player Andy Turner, unfortunately an under the weather Andy also could only manage two frames as Jason steamed into the semi final only to be confronted by 2009 World Champion Phil Harrison.

This was the second time this season Jason had come up against Phil and perhaps more surprisingly it was also another win for Jason by 6-2, making it three in a row against one of the games greatest players.

Harrison after dominating the tour has fallen of stony ground in recent times, having not reached a final as yet in this years series.

In the other half of the draw Liam was also taking care of business with wins against Peter Lee (Bucks) Steve McCann and event 1 winner Karl Sutton of Lowestoft all by the score line 5-1.

Liam then swiftly swept aside yet another Northants County A player Danny Smith from Kettering with another impressive 6-2 win

Unfortunately for Liam he then came up against a wall of confidence in the form of Bates, to give Jason his second victory in the series and back to back wins. Congratulations to them both on reaching yet another final each.

Other scores included:
Plate final - Coventry’s Connor Treacy 5-3 Kettering’s Mick Gormley. Connor certainly looks like a future star if he keeps playing like this with wins over Terry Keaney a former Event winner, Richie Matthews the conqueror of Phil Harrison in Event 2, Robert Hogan and Arron Moloney.

Congratulations to everyone and hope to see you all and more at Event 4 on the 22nd August.

Bates/White Final
South Midlands Pool TourEvent 2 of the South Midlands Pool Tour saw 2 new faces in the final as Jason Bates met Mark White in the final match. Unfortunately time was against us and no final match was able to be played.

Jason, although being a new face this year has already been very successful by getting to the semi finals of event 1. Mark although not a new face as such to our events he has never been to a main event final before but has in fact won 2 Plate events over the last couple of years.

On his way to the final Jason overcame Luke Bennett in the last 32 and then Northampton’s England Youth player Callum Singleton. After only losing 3 frames so far Jason then came up against his toughest test of the day in the form of Kev McCallum from Corby. In a massive quarter final Kev finally lost out in the final and deciding frame of 11. In the semi final Jason met the Event 1 finalist Wayne Fryer. Wayne lost out by a scoreline of 6-4.

Mark made his way to the final by playing 1 more match than Jason as he didn’t get a bye in the last 64. Unfortunately his opponent, Terry Billingham, didn’t put up much of a fight and went down to a white wash 5-0. In the last 32 and lest 16 matches Mark came up against two local players in Ryan Linnell of Northampton and Jamie McGauley from Milton Keynes. Mark breezed past these two quality players only dropping 3 frames in the 2 matches. Up next for Mark in the quarter final was Event 1 winner Karl Sutton. Unfortunately for Karl there was to be no final for him this time as he went out by 6-2. Up next in the semi final was Kettering’s Terry Keaney who also didn’t trouble Mark as he won through to the final by 6-1.

Callum Singleton
County Pool"CONGRATULATIONS" to our Callum Singleton for qualifying to play for England Under 18's in the World Championships in blackpool in June, well proud :-)
Sutton wins SMPT Event 1
South Midlands Pool TourKarl Sutton of Lowestoft finally managed to claim a Tour Event win after twice being a losing finalist in the previous two seasons. The Former England U21 and now England Senior squad member claimed the Event 1 title by beating the impressive Wayne Fryer of London by 7 frames to 5.
Wayne started hi day against Northampton’s Mark Oliver who, as a pay on the day player, had this match drawn at random from the list of TBA’s. The match was drawn by his Northampton colleague Gary Matthews. Unfortunately although Mark put up a valiant effort he finally lost by 5-2. Karl was also lucky enough to draw a TBA in the first round but unlike Wayne there was no opponent for Karl so he progressed into the last 32 without a match.
Next up for Wayne was another Northampton County player in the form of Kettering’s Danny Smith. Although playing some good pool Danny only managed to chalk up 1 frame to Wayne’s 5. Karl’s last 32 match was against Joe Cooper who like Danny against Wayne only managed 1 frame and Karl took the win.
In the last 16 Wayne’s opponent was former Tour winner and IPA tour player, Phil Hargin from Corby. Phil managed to put up some resistance to the ever increasing confidence that Wayne was creating by getting 4 frames but ultimately Wayne still managed to get through by the odd frame in nine. Karl’s progress appeared slightly easier as he progressed by 5 frames to 2 against Tim Williamson of Oxon but I’m sure it wasn’t as easy as the scoreline suggests.
Next up for Wayne and Karl were the quarter finals and it was England U21’s Jamie McGauley for Karl and Northampton County A vice captain Graham Berruto for Wayne. Graham played some excellent pool to try and stop the Wayne but unfortunately it was to no avail as Wayne advanced in the close match by 6 frames to 4. Karl’s match was slightly less close as he won 6-3 in just under 45 minutes.
Semi finals were next and for Wayne it was another Northampton County A player in the shape of Terry Keaney who had miraculously got through his quarter final against Scott Surridge of Worcester by 6-5 after being 4-0 down. Terry managed to keep up his record of taking matches to the deciding frame but this time the former Tour event winner was on the losing side of a 6-5 result. Karl’s semi final saw him take on the all conquering Jason Bates from Nuneaton. Jason had already sent packing two Pro’s in Rob Chilton (5-4 in the last 16) and current World Champ Phil Harrison (6-5 in the quarters) so all eyes were on this semi to see if it would go all the way too. Unfortunately for Jason it didn’t as he went down to a 6-1 scoreline.
That then left Karl and Wayne in a very entertaining final and I’m sure we’ll see the both of them in more finals at future events. Congratulations to them both on reaching the final with the amount of pool talent that was present on the day.
Also played during the day was the Plate event which was won by Northampton’s own England youth player Callum Singleton. Callum beat Kenny Riddell of Bucks by 5 frames to 0. The scoreline definitely did not reflect the match and Kenny can count himself very unlucky to be on the receiving end of a whitewash. However Callum played extremely well and more than deserved the victory against a competition full of very good players.
'NEWSFLASH'
County PoolNorthants Juniors Beat Warwickshire 'A' (first time in their History) convincingly by 25 - 19, GREAT PERFORMANCE BOYS
Warks Youth v Northants Youth Match Report
County PoolCongratulations Boys...... The day started of really well playing the 'B' side with all the lads hungry for another good win on the back of Hereford (32 - 12). Warwickshire had a few new players in the 'B' but our boys didn't let it worry them winning the first set 9 - 2 and the other 3 sets 8 - 3 for another good win (33 - 11). 4/4's for Josh Nickels, Ryan Fullthorpe and Ryan Linnell and 3/4's for Callum Patrick, Callum Singleton, Damian Broxton, Connor Singleton & Daniel Byrne with Josh Nickels given POM.......... The second match against the 'A' side is always a well fought match, usually with Warwickshire coming good at the end, but things were about to change this time !! Although the 'A' side had lost a few of their formidable players & gained a few from the previous 'B' side we had lost 3 of our own very good players so the standard was still well matched. Everyone fought bravely and after an edgy start we won the first 2 sets 6 - 5 leaving us 12 - 10 up. Warwickshire seemed to pull their socks up and won the first 6 frames of the 3rd set giving them a 16 - 12 lead but this wasn't to be for long. The lads rallied round and ended up winning the last 5 frames of the 3rd set and the first 6 of the 4th set a total of 12 wins in a row, with new Captain Daniel Trasler giving us the winning frame and returnee Levi Freeman getting the next frame to five us a 24 - 16 lead and the historical win. Final score was 25 - 19 to Northants. Another solid performance by Ryan Linnell secured him another 4/4 (8/8 overall for the day) and POM against the 'A'......3/4's again from Callum Patrick & Callum Singleton and also Alex Matthews and new boy Josh Carpenter. Well done boys let's keep our feet on the ground now and keep up the good work :-)

had some great games in c.i.u. in past seems such a shame the sore losers and gamesmanship types persist in trying to ruin things.
